Madrid at Christmas is pure magic: spectacular lights, markets, nativity scenes and plans for the whole family. Here's what to do, where and when, with the must-sees and a few tips to avoid the crowds.

The Christmas lights

From the switch-on (late November) until 6 January, Gran Vía, Cibeles, Puerta del Sol and Callao light up. It's free. To see them all without tiring, a night free tour or the lights bus (Naviluz) is the best option.

Christmas markets

The classic is the Plaza Mayor market (nativity figures, decorations and Innocents' Day jokes). Those at Matadero and Plaza de España are also worth it.

Family plans

  • Cortylandia and the city-centre ice rinks.
  • Three Kings Parade (5 January): the great procession — arrive early for a spot.
  • Magical Christmas in Torrejón: Spain's largest Christmas park, with shows and rides. A great plan with kids. See Magical Christmas Torrejón tickets →

Nativity scenes

The monumental nativity in Plaza Mayor and those in several churches. Beautiful, free and very festive.

Tips

  • Dates: from the switch-on (late Nov) to 6 January.
  • Avoid crowds: Gran Vía fills up at weekends; go on weekdays or early.
  • Book paid plans (Torrejón, Naviluz) in advance: they sell out.
