Visiting Auschwitz from Krakow: practical guide

By dani · 20 May 2026 · 8 min read

Visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau isn't sightseeing in the usual sense: it's a place of memory that hits hard and is best approached with respect and some preparation. This guide sorts the logistics so the day goes smoothly.

Book ahead (it's required)

The memorial requires a booked, timed entry. Individual entry is free but very limited and sells out; during peak hours you can only enter with an educator guide. That's why most choose an organised visit that secures a slot, guide and transport. Compare them in our Auschwitz tickets guide.

How to get there

Auschwitz is in Oświęcim, about 70 km from Krakow (1h-1h30). Day trips from Krakow include round-trip transport, the most convenient option and free of bus-timetable hassle.

What to expect and how long

The visit covers Auschwitz I (the museum blocks) and Auschwitz II-Birkenau (the extermination camp, 3 km away). In total, about 3.5-4 hours. Block the whole day counting transport.

Practical tips

  • Sober clothing and respectful behaviour: it's a cemetery, not an attraction.
  • Luggage: large bags aren't allowed (small size limit); travel light.
  • Don't combine it with the Wieliczka Salt Mine the same day. It's too much, physically and emotionally.
  • Consider carefully with young children: the content is very harsh.
