Free tour vs guided tour: which to choose
By dani · 9 May 2026 · 6 min read
"Free tour" and "guided tour" aren't the same, and choosing wrong can waste a morning or make you overpay. Here are the real differences so you decide based on your trip.
What each one is
A free tour is a walking tour with no fixed price: you pay what you want at the end. Usually outdoors, in a group, 2-2.5 hours. A paid guided tour has a set price, smaller (or private) groups and often included entry to monuments.
When the free tour wins
- It's your first day and you want to get oriented with context.
- You're travelling on a tight budget.
- Seeing the exteriors and the neighbourhood feel is enough.
For this, see our free tours by destination. The Madrid free tour or the Granada one are perfect "first day" picks.
When the paid guided tour wins
- The monument needs a ticket with queues (Vatican, Alhambra): the guided tour saves hours.
- You want depth, a small group or a private experience.
- You want to go inside, not just see from outside.
That's where our guided tours with included access come in.
The tip trap
A free tour isn't "free": a fair tip is around 10-15 € per person if you enjoyed it. Doing the maths, a paid guided tour with tickets sometimes works out cheaper than a free tour + tip + buying entries separately. Add up the total before deciding.
Our recommendation
Combine both: a free tour on day one to get your bearings, and a guided tour for the 1-2 must-see monuments that need access. Best value in almost any city.
