Lisbon in 3 days: what to see and how to get around
By dani · 30 May 2026 · 8 min read
Lisbon wins you over with its hills, its trams and the light off the Tagus. Three days cover the essentials without rushing; here's the plan and the tricks for getting around a city that's constantly up and down.
Day 1: Alfama and the centre
Start in Alfama, the oldest district: narrow lanes, São Jorge Castle and viewpoints like Santa Luzia. Head down to the Baixa and Praça do Comércio by the river. A Lisbon free tour on day one orients you and gives context on fado and history.
Day 2: Belém
Give the morning to Belém: the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery and, a must, the pastéis de Belém at the original bakery. Go early: the monuments queue. In the afternoon, back to the centre and up the Santa Justa Lift or tram 28.
Day 3: Sintra (day trip) or neighbourhoods
If you want more, Sintra is a short train away: the Pena Palace and its gardens are like a fairy tale. If you'd rather stay, explore Chiado, Bairro Alto and more miradouros.
Getting around
- Viva Viagem card: rechargeable, valid for trams, metro and funiculars.
- Comfy shoes: Lisbon is pure hills and the cobbles get slippery in the rain.
- Tram 28: the classic; go early for a seat and watch for pickpockets.
